Southwark Industrial Audit 2019

An audit of every industrial premises in the whole borough of Southwark, carried out by nine researchers in 2019.

The London Borough of Southwark are rewriting their planning policy, putting together the New Southwark Plan (NSP) and Old Kent Road Opportunity Area Action Plan (OKR AAP). Cities have been studying Southwark and the OKR since 2015 and in 2019 conducted a London Met funded audit of all industrial land in Southwark, an entirely original undertaking which is the first of its kind in London. A draft interactive map of our findings can be seen here. We partnered with LB Southwark who simultaneously employed We Made That as consultants, who undertook their own audit of the Old Kent Road opportunity area, which we excluded from our survey, with the intention of bringing the two datasets together to provide evidence for the Examination in Public (EIP) of the New Southwark Plan (NSP) in early 2021.

We have collated in a GIS geopackage the two datasets of industry in the London Borough of Southwark and used the geopackage data to produce an interactive analytical online map plus mapped polygons of planning policy-relevant areas, such as land which is designated industrial. We are using the updated dataset and interactive map to conduct analysis to produce representations for the NSP EIP and in order to make suggested improvement of industrial land and accommodation policies in Southwark (including plan designation geography) to better meet strategic policy in current and emerging London Plan and relevant London Plan related documents).

Raw data and survey materials from the audit of the Southwark are available upon request, please contact us cities@londonmet.ac.uk to discuss your needs.

“While the importance of quality of place to creative clustering is repeatedly acknowledged, the associated micro-spatialities and morphologies remain under-researched.”
