Protect Manufacturing Space

A micro-lecture by Mark Brearley for the Architecture Foundation’s Manifesto for London, 2016.

In this micro lecture from 26 April 2016, Mark Brearley explains why the new mayor must address the accommodation crisis by making space for industry. In 2016 The Architecture Foundation compiled 10 proposals challenging the new mayor to think more ambitiously about London’s development. As part of the AF’s ongoing Manifesto for London project, the 10 proposals have been put forward by leading thinkers on London’s development and address a wide range of issues from workspace to consultation to planning permission to housing.

The Architecture Foundation did the same again in 2019, this time on stage at three Architecture on Stage events relating to London’s mayoral election, where ten speakers proposed initiatives they want the city’s next Mayor to adopt. In a quick-fire format, the speakers put forward proposals aimed at protecting manufacturing space, empowering community land trusts, educating planners and making better use of public land.

For over 20 years, the Architecture Foundation has brought together professionals from across the built environment to discuss and act on issues related to design and the built environment. With a renewed focus on the city and the critical intersection of architecture and politics, the Architecture Foundation works to effect meaningful change on policy and practice.
