Mark Brearley advises College van Rijksadviseurs, Den Haag

Mark Brearley participates in a panel of international experts for Dutch government meeting on industry in the city, 2018.

Mark Brearley participated as an invited guest in a panel of international experts with the College van Rijksadviseurs, the Netherlands Board of Government Advisers, at a Netherlands government meeting in The Hague, 12 December 2018. Mark was invited to discuss his knowledge from London, Brussels and Munich and advise about mixing living and working in cities. With the current high pressure of the housing and office markets leaving little room for anything else, Mark spoke of the importance of mix in cities, advocating for other functions, like industry, to be provided with space (and good quality, suitable space). He spoke of the ‘battle for the ground floor’: the huge challenge to properly divide the ground floor space between the city’s different functions. He advised that more ground floor space be given over to industry and other functions that rely more heavily on being on ground level (for access, deliveries, storage, yard space and so on).
